Harvest Monday - October 13, 2014

Happy Thanksgiving!  If you’re Canadian, that is - if you're in the United States, Happy Columbus Day!

So today is the Thanksgiving holiday here in Canada.  Our family celebrated last night as we find it much more convenient to have our get-together the day BEFORE the actual holiday.  There is plenty of time for preparations on Saturday and Sunday morning, we have a wonderful, leisurely family dinner on Sunday evening and then Monday is a day of relaxation and preparing for the week ahead.

And since the shops are open on Sunday but not on Monday, having dinner on Sunday evening means less stress for me because I will inevitably realize that I am missing a key ingredient, just as I start to cook - my husband is always on standby ;)

So on to the harvest.

Broccoli.  That’s it.  Really.

I made a wonderful room temperature broccoli with roasted garlic oil from one of Ina Garten’s cookbooks and it was served as part of our Thanksgiving dinner.  There were only enough mature heads to allow for a good spoonful per person and I cooked it a bit too long - I keep forgetting that homegrown produce is so much more tender than store bought - but everyone loved it nonetheless.

I did also harvest some herbs for the stuffing:

Sage, Parsley, Rosemary & Thyme

But herbs are not something I tally unless I use (or freeze) a large amount.

There’s still lots growing in the garden – kale, Chinese cabbage, green onions, kohlrabi, more broccoli and a tiny bit of lettuce as well as some baby collards – but I just didn’t have the time to pick, much less cook, anything up as I was in and out almost the entire week.

So there you have it.

My harvest total this week was:

Broccoli – 230 grams (.051 lbs)

Total to Date – 214.68 kg (473.29 lbs)

To see what everyone else has been harvesting over the past week – which I’m sure is a damn sight more than me! - head on over to Daphne’s Dandelions, our host for Harvest Mondays.

Till next time…

  1. Happy Thanksgiving! (I'm not Canadian but I have some Canadian spirit.) Your broccoli dish looks wonderful. I'm worried that I didn't plant my broccoli on time and suddenly find myself craving broccoli.

    1. Thanks! I planted two varieties of broccoli - Packman & Munchkin - and both were late going into the ground. Thankfully I am getting a few small heads from the Packman as the Munchkins haven't produced anything yet and sub zero weather is quickly approaching.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving! Broccoli with roasted garlic oil sounds delicious, I'll have to give that a try.

  3. Happy Thanksgiving. We're doing American Thanksgiving a week early this year to accommodate my daughter who is is coming home for her favorite holiday. It's a lot easier for her to get time off if it's the week before. I usually dress up the brassicas we're having like you did, with something involving garlic and butter, to placate the veggie haters.

  5. Happy Thanksgiving! LOL, we had the exact same herb harvest plus the broccoli. Slim pickins' this time of the year for sure. I'm still hoping I get the brussels sprouts before snow. :)

    1. You said it! I tried growing brussel sprouts many moons ago and I only ended up with 1/2" sprouts - hopefully you have a much better harvest than I did!

  6. Happy Thanksgiving! Yes, homegrown produce cooks a lot faster than store bought. Broccoli and garlic, meant to be.

    1. Thanks Nancy - I did make an effort to get some fall crops going this year and have had some successes and some not so successful - a learning experience for sure!

  8. Margaret. Happy Thanksgiving! Your broccoli dish look great. I am a big Ina fan too. Please know that your Feed was not acting funny. My computer was down for 2 weeks and then I got sick. I am busy playing catch up right now, so for a while you will be getting posts from September and October.

  9. Happy Thanksgiving! I sure wish ours was this time of the year--much easier to provide fresh ingredients from the garden. The broccoli dish sounds so good. I've finally started to roast most of the vegetables and it really brings out their goodness. I shall have to try the broccoli with garlic---sounds like a winner!

    1. Thanks Sue! I love roasted vegetables - I once prepared roasted carrots (another super simple Ina Garten dish actually) & I couldn't believe how amazing they were.
